Updated on October 5, 2026 ✓ Information checked on October 5, 2026 adapted from the Portuguese original
Three days are just right for a first visit. The logic: a village day, an Espelho day at low tide and a Caraíva day. First of all, open the Espelho Beach tides page and see which day of your trip has low tide at the best time.
Overview
| Day | Theme | Low tide needed? |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Quadrado and the village beaches | No |
| 2 | Espelho and Curuípe | Yes |
| 3 | Caraíva (or Rio Verde) | No |
Day 1: the village and the beaches below
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| Morning | The empty Quadrado and the church |
| Midday | Nativos Beach |
| Afternoon | Walk to Coqueiros Beach |
| Evening | Sunset and dinner on the Quadrado |
Day 2: Espelho and Curuípe
Leave with time to spare to arrive before low tide. Enjoy the natural pools at Espelho Beach and walk to Curuípe. On the way back, stop at Itapororoca if you have time. Don’t step on the coral and bring water.
Day 3: Caraíva
Head south to the riverbank and cross by canoe to Caraíva, where, according to Wikivoyage, there are no cars. Walk around the village, swim in a calm stretch of the river and watch the late afternoon. Ideally, spend the night. Step-by-step guide in how to get from Trancoso to Caraíva.
Alternative without Caraíva: a relaxing day at Rio Verde and back to the Quadrado for a final sunset.
Adjustments
- Early low tide on day 3? Do Espelho and Caraíva together and use day 2 for Rio Verde.
- Heavy rain? Swap the dirt roads for the village and see Trancoso on rainy days.
- One more day? Follow the 4-day itinerary.

Frequently asked questions
Are three days enough for Trancoso?
They are enough for the essentials: the Quadrado, the village beaches, Espelho and Caraíva. For Arraial and Porto Seguro, add days.
Can I combine Espelho and Caraíva on the same day?
Yes, if low tide is early. Leave in the morning, enjoy Espelho and continue to Caraíva in the afternoon, ideally to spend the night.
Which day should I do first?
The day with low tide at the best time is your Espelho day. The other two fit around it.
What if it rains?
Swap the dirt-road day for the village day and see the Trancoso on rainy days guide.
