How to Get from Trancoso to Caraíva
A road to the bank of the Caraíva River, a canoe to the village and, if the tide is right, a stop at Espelho on the way.

Caraíva lies south of Trancoso, beyond Espelho Beach, at the mouth of the Caraíva River. The journey combines a road, partly unpaved, and a short canoe crossing, because, according to Wikivoyage, there are no cars in the village.
The route
- Trancoso → bank of the Caraíva River, by road heading south, through the Espelho area. Part of the way is dirt road, which gets worse after rain.
- Canoe crossing to the village, paid separately.
- In the village, on foot, along sandy streets.

Day trip or overnight?
- Day trip: a long day; leave early and arrange your return in advance.
- Overnight: recommended. The village is calmer at night and the sunset over the river is an experience in itself. Bring just a backpack.

- Cash for the canoe and small purchases.
- Flashlight, sunscreen, insect repellent.
- A spare power bank: don’t count on a strong cell signal.
Further south
Near Caraíva are the Pataxó village of Barra Velha and Monte Pascoal. Visits to Indigenous villages only by invitation or on tours organized by the community. Caraíva features in the 3-day itinerary and the longer ones.
