Updated on October 5, 2026 ✓ Information checked on October 5, 2026 adapted from the Portuguese original

The Buranhém River separates the town of Porto Seguro from the district of Arraial d’Ajuda. According to Wikipedia, the two sides are linked by ferry (balsa). If you are heading to Trancoso, this crossing is the most common route from the airport and from downtown Porto Seguro: once across the river, you continue south by road.

How it works

  1. In Porto Seguro, head to the ferry dock at the mouth of the Buranhém.
  2. Board with your car or on foot.
  3. Disembark on the Arraial d’Ajuda side.
  4. Continue by road to Trancoso.

Foot passengers can also cross and continue by bus, taxi or pre-arranged transport, as Wikivoyage suggests for travelers going to Arraial.

Schedules and fares

The ferry is run by a concession company, with schedules and fares that vary by vehicle type and period. This guide does not publish prices or timetables without an up-to-date official source. Check at the dock or through official channels before you leave, especially late at night and on public holidays.

The overland alternative

You can reach Trancoso without the ferry by going around on the highway. The route is longer in kilometers, but it may be worth it when the queue is long. Ask your driver which option is faster at that moment.

Tips to avoid the queue

  • Avoid peak arrival and departure times on public holidays.
  • In high season, consider crossing on foot and taking transport on the other side.
  • On the way back to the airport, allow extra time.

Make the most of the crossing

The ferry is also your route to a day in Porto Seguro: the Historic Center, Recife de Fora and the Jaqueira Reserve. See the day trip to Arraial d’Ajuda and Porto Seguro.
