Espelho Beach Tides: How to Choose Your Day
Espelho's natural pools only appear at low tide. Learn how to read the Navy's tide table and plan your itinerary around it.

Espelho Beach has a strip of sand, cliffs and natural pools, according to Wikipedia. The pools depend on the tide: at low tide, the reefs are exposed and hold clear water close to the sand; at high tide, they disappear. The same goes for the trip to Recife de Fora, in Porto Seguro, which only runs at low tide.
Where to find the official tide table
Brazil’s official tide forecasts are published by the Brazilian Navy’s Hydrography Center (CHM). On the website, choose the station closest to Trancoso from the Bahia list and open the month of your trip. Apps and surf websites repeat this data, but the Navy’s is the reference.
How to read the table
Each day usually shows four times: two high tides and two low tides, with the height in meters.
| What you see | What it means | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Time | The predicted peak | Arrive before low tide |
| Lowest height of the day | Low tide | The lower it is, the more reef is exposed |
| Highest height of the day | High tide | Pools covered |
| Consecutive days | Low tide gets later each day | Plan the whole week |
Over the month, the strongest tides (lowest and highest) occur around the new moon and the full moon. Around the first and last quarter, the difference between high and low tide is smaller.
Step by step to plan your itinerary
- Open the month’s tide table and mark the days with low tide between mid-morning and mid-afternoon.
- Among those days, choose the ones with the lowest height.
- Set that day aside for Espelho and Curuípe. If you have another good day, use it for Recife de Fora.
- Fit the rest of the itinerary around it: the Quadrado, the village beaches, Caraíva, Arraial.
- The day before, check again and look at the weather forecast.
How early to arrive
The road to Espelho has dirt stretches, and travel time varies with rain and the type of vehicle. This guide does not publish travel times without an official source. The practical recommendation is to arrive before low tide, to enjoy the ebbing tide and the lowest period.
Plan B
Without a low tide at a good time, Espelho is still beautiful for a beach day, just without the pools. On those days, choose Nativos Beach, Coqueiros or Rio da Barra, close to the village.
Safety
- Don’t step on the coral and don’t feed the fish.
- Watch for the rising tide: head back to the sand with time to spare.
- Follow local guidance on currents and flags.
To fit the tide into your days, see the 2- to 7-day itineraries.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I check the tide table for Trancoso?
On the website of the Brazilian Navy's Hydrography Center (CHM), which publishes the official forecasts. Choose the station on the list closest to Trancoso and use your travel dates.
What tide height is good for Espelho?
The lower the low tide, the more of the reef is exposed. Very low tides, close to zero or negative on the table, usually work best. There is no official minimum: compare the days of your trip.
What time should I get to Espelho?
Before the time of low tide, allowing for the dirt-road stretch. That way you enjoy the ebbing tide and the lowest period.
What if low tide is too early or at night?
Change the day. When there is no low tide at a good time, enjoy the village beaches and treat Espelho as a regular beach day, without counting on the pools.
