Nativos Beach is the beach just below the Quadrado. For many people, it’s their first swim in Trancoso: just walk around the church and head down. English-language Wikipedia describes it as the beach with beach shacks and hotels closest to the village.
How to get there
- On foot from the Quadrado: the path down starts near the end of the lawn, behind the São João Batista Church. On the way back, be ready for the climb.
- Through the lower village: streets running down toward the river also lead to the sand.
- By car: leave the car in the village. The final stretch is on foot.
What the beach is like
Light sand, coconut palms and the open sea, with the cliff and forest behind. To the north is the mouth of the Trancoso River, where fresh and salt water meet, a beautiful sight in the late afternoon. To the south, the sand continues to Coqueiros Beach.
Sea conditions change with the tide and wind. In general, there are calm swimming spots and others with waves. There is no fixed rule: look at the water, check for flags and follow the lifeguards’ guidance.
Facilities
There are beach shacks and beach restaurants with tables, chairs and umbrellas. Prices vary a lot between high and low season, and this guide does not publish prices without an official source. Before sitting down, ask whether there is a minimum spend or a chair rental fee.
Precautions
- River mouth: on the ebbing tide, the current can pull you out. Don’t swim at the mouth of the river.
- Sun: there is little natural shade in the middle of the day. Use sunscreen and a hat.
- Belongings: don’t leave bags unattended on the sand.
- Environment: the coast south of the Trancoso River is part of the Caraíva/Trancoso Environmental Protection Area (APA), created in 1993 by the Bahia State Government. Take your trash with you.
Pair it with
A simple day in Trancoso combines the Quadrado in the morning, Nativos and Coqueiros beaches in the afternoon and a return to the Quadrado for sunset. That’s the first day of the 2-day itinerary.
Practical tips
- The climb back to the Quadrado is short but steep: bring water and avoid the midday sun.
- Near the river mouth, the current can change with the tide: look before going in and follow the lifeguards.
- Beach shacks charge for what you consume and sometimes for chairs and umbrellas: ask before sitting down.
- Take your trash back with you: the beach is inside an environmental protection area.
