Shopping and Crafts in Trancoso

From the shops in the Quadrado's little houses to Pataxó crafts: how to shop well and support the makers.

Updated on October 5, 2026 ✓ Information checked on October 5, 2026 adapted from the Portuguese original

The colorful little houses around the Quadrado are now home to shops and studios selling clothes, home décor, accessories and art. Shopping there in the late afternoon is part of the experience. As an editorial rule, we do not name individual shops.

What you’ll find

  • Beachwear and light clothing, in designer boutiques and brand stores.
  • Décor and objects made from natural materials.
  • Art and photography in galleries and studios.
  • Regional crafts, such as pieces in wood, straw and ceramics.

Pataxó crafts

The Pataxó people live in southern Bahia and keep up a tradition of craftwork. Buying directly from the community, for example on visits to the Jaqueira Reserve, an ecotourism project founded in 1998 by Pataxó women, ensures the income reaches the makers. Ask where the pieces come from and be wary of “Indigenous crafts” with no identification.

In the region

In Porto Seguro, the Historic Center and the waterfront are packed with craft and souvenir shops, selling pieces such as pinwheels and colorful ornaments. See Porto Seguro’s Historic Center.

Tips for shopping well

  • Compare before you buy: prices vary a lot.
  • Ask for a receipt (nota fiscal) for larger purchases.
  • For large pieces, ask about shipping.
  • Do not buy coral, shells, wild bird feathers or animals.
