Caraíva is a district of the municipality of Porto Seguro, at the mouth of the Caraíva River, south of Trancoso and Espelho Beach. According to Wikipedia, the district had 13,214 inhabitants in the 2022 Census, counting the village and the rural area. The village itself is small and has one defining feature: you arrive by canoe.

The crossing and the sandy streets

The road ends on the riverbank. From there, a short canoe crossing takes you to the village, as Wikivoyage describes. No cars circulate in the village and the “streets” are soft sand. That changes the pace: everything is done on foot, slowly, and heavy luggage becomes a problem. Bring a backpack.

What to do

  • Stroll around the village: simple houses, the São Sebastião Church and life along the riverside.
  • Beach: the open sea is a few steps away, with the river mouth on one side.
  • River: canoe trips and swimming in calm stretches of the river, always away from the current at the mouth.
  • Late afternoon: sunset over the river is one of the village’s highlights.

The Pataxó and Monte Pascoal

South of Caraíva is the Pataxó village of Barra Velha, which, according to the Instituto Socioambiental (ISA), has existed for about 250 years. Farther south and inland lies Monte Pascoal National and Historical Park. Visits to Indigenous villages only by invitation or on tours organized by the community itself.

How to get there from Trancoso

The route heads south on a road with dirt stretches, through the Espelho area, to the riverbank. The options are a car, a taxi and pre-arranged transport; agencies also run organized tours. Precautions

  • River and sea meet at the mouth: strong currents at certain points in the tide.
  • A flashlight at night: street lighting is limited.
  • Check services (ATMs, cell signal) before you go; don’t count on them.
  • Respect the community and the quiet at night.

Practical tips

  • Travel light, with a backpack: the streets are soft sand and there are no cars in the village.
  • Bring cash for the canoe crossing and small purchases; check payment methods on site.
  • Spending at least one night lets you see the village without the day-trip crowds.
  • Respect the river: don't swim in the current at the river mouth.
