Trancoso is a district of Porto Seguro, in southern Bahia, built around the Quadrado, a lawn lined with colorful houses and a church facing the sea. The village grew out of a Jesuit mission founded in 1586, according to Wikipedia. The itineraries below always start from the village and grow with the number of days.

The tide rule

The natural pools at Espelho Beach and Recife de Fora appear at low tide. Before fixing any itinerary, open the Espelho Beach tides page and see which mornings or afternoons of your trip will have the lowest tide. The times change every day, so this guide does not give a fixed time.

Getting around

Road travel times mentioned in the itineraries are always estimates: they depend on the dirt-road stretch, rain and the type of transport. Check before setting off, especially for Caraíva and Monte Pascoal.

Frequently asked questions

How many days are enough to see Trancoso?

Three or four days cover the Quadrado, the village beaches, Espelho Beach and a day in Caraíva. With five to seven days, you can add Arraial d'Ajuda, Porto Seguro's historic center and longer outings.

Why do the itineraries depend on the tide?

Espelho Beach and Recife de Fora reveal their natural pools at low tide. Check the tide table before fixing the order of your days.

Can I follow the itineraries without a car?

Some of them, yes, but the southern beaches and Caraíva depend on dirt roads and pre-arranged transport. Check your transport options before you travel.

Can I change the order of the days?

You can, and you should. The rule is to fit in the tide days first (Espelho and Recife de Fora) and arrange everything else around them.
