Trancoso works well for families: the village is small, the Quadrado is a wide lawn where children can run around, and the nearby beaches are a short walk downhill. The main precautions concern the sea, the sun and getting around.
The most practical beaches
- Nativos Beach: the closest to the Quadrado. Watch out for the river mouth.
- Coqueiros Beach: next door, with shallow stretches at low tide.
- Espelho Beach: natural pools at low tide, according to Wikipedia. Longer access, by a road with dirt stretches.
Make the tide work for you
At low tide, shallow stretches and natural pools appear, good for supervised children. Choose your day with the tide guide. Even in shallow water, stay within arm’s reach of little ones: the tide rises fast.
Family activities
- Running and playing on the Quadrado’s lawn in the late afternoon.
- Watching fish in Espelho’s natural pools, without touching the coral.
- Visiting the Jaqueira Reserve to learn about Pataxó culture (check age suitability and visit length).
- A canoe ride to reach Caraíva, where there are no cars.
Precautions
- Sun: sunscreen, a hat, a UV-protective shirt and shade in the middle of the day.
- Hydration: water all the time.
- Mosquitoes: an age-appropriate repellent.
- River mouths and open sea: only with an adult alongside and away from the current.
- Cliffs: no playing at the base of the cliff walls.
- Roads: a car seat in the car, including on transfers.
Logistics
- Stay near the Quadrado so you can do everything on foot. See where to stay.
- Bring a baby carrier or sling: strollers struggle on sand and dirt roads.
- Have a pharmacy and a health center mapped out. See health in Trancoso.
