Trancoso is known as a destination for couples: a small village, the Quadrado lit up at night, beaches at the foot of the cliffs and nearby villages that change the pace of the trip. Here are some ideas for enjoying it together.
Late afternoon on the Quadrado
The classic plan is sunset behind the São João Batista Church, with the sea down below. Then dinner in one of the little houses around the lawn. In high season, book ahead. See where to eat.
Beaches for some peace
- Itapororoca and Rio Verde, to the south.
- Rio da Barra, to the north.
- Weekdays outside the high season make a difference.
Your Espelho day
Choose the day by the tide and arrive early. The natural pools at Espelho Beach appear at low tide. See Espelho Beach tides.
A night in Caraíva
Crossing the river by canoe and spending the night in Caraíva is a different kind of experience: no cars, sandy streets and the river at sunset. Bring just a backpack. See how to get from Trancoso to Caraíva.
When to go
For peace and quiet, avoid New Year’s Eve, Carnival and July. The months outside school holidays and public holidays bring a calmer village and lower prices. See when to go.
Where to stay
Near the Quadrado to do everything on foot; on a beach or along the road for more silence (with transport). Compare in where to stay in Trancoso.
