Itapororoca Beach lies south of Trancoso, past Rio Verde Beach and before Espelho Beach. In aerial photos from Brazil’s Ministry of Tourism, it appears with a wide strip of sand, a blue sea and a forest-covered cliff behind the beach.

How to get there

Access is by road, by car, taxi or pre-arranged transport, along the route linking Trancoso to the southern beaches. Part of the way in the region is unpaved; after heavy rain, conditions get worse. Check before you set off and agree on a return time.

What the beach is like

  • Wide sand, especially at low tide.
  • Open sea, in shades of green and blue.
  • A cliff and restinga forest behind.
  • Fewer people than on the beaches below the Quadrado.

The beach is inside the Caraíva/Trancoso Environmental Protection Area, the state protected area created in 1993 between the Trancoso and Caraíva rivers.

Precautions

  • Little shade: a hat, sunscreen and water.
  • Open sea: check the waves and currents before going in.
  • Cliffs: keep away from the base.
  • Take your trash back with you.

Pair it with

Itapororoca fits well into a day of southern beaches with Rio Verde, or as a stop on the way to Espelho. To pick the right day for Espelho, see Espelho Beach tides.

Practical tips

  • Itapororoca is usually less crowded than the village beaches: good if you're looking for peace and quiet.
  • Bring water, sunscreen and snacks; facilities are limited and change with the season.
  • Check the access before you set off, especially after rain.
  • Use low tide to walk along the wide sand.
