Rio da Barra Beach lies north of Trancoso, on the stretch of coast leading to Arraial d’Ajuda. It is a long beach and, in general, less busy than the beaches below the Quadrado. The name comes from the small river that flows into the sea at this point.

How to get there

  • By car, taxi or pre-arranged transport: the most practical way. Agree on the return time before you get out.
  • Walking along the sand: possible for those staying in the village who like to walk, but it requires crossing the mouth of the Trancoso River. Only do it with a favorable tide and no current.

This guide does not publish travel times or fares without an official source: check with whoever is driving you.

What the beach is like

A long strip of sand, coconut palms, restinga vegetation and low cliffs in some stretches. The river mouth forms an area of calm water at certain points in the tide, but it can also have currents. The open sea has waves that vary with the wind.

Who it’s for

  • Those who want a quieter beach without going far.
  • Those traveling between Trancoso and Arraial, with a stop at Taípe.
  • Couples and groups who prefer to walk and enjoy the silence.

Precautions

  • Few facilities: bring water, sunscreen and snacks.
  • Don’t go into the sea near the river mouth on an ebbing tide.
  • Avoid walking alone at the end of the day and don’t leave valuables visible in the car.

Practical tips

  • Go by car, taxi or pre-arranged transport; confirm the drop-off point and return time with the driver.
  • Bring water and snacks: facilities are much more limited than on the village beaches.
  • At the mouth of the river that gives the beach its name, don't swim in the ebb-tide current.
  • Fewer people also means less help nearby: don't wander off alone.
