Taípe is the cliff beach. Between Arraial d’Ajuda and Trancoso, tall walls of clay and sandstone in white, yellow and orange drop down to the sand, topped with coconut palms and forest. Wikipedia lists Taípe among the beaches of the Arraial d’Ajuda district.
How to get there
From Trancoso, take the road toward Arraial d’Ajuda, by car, taxi or pre-arranged transport. Some stretches offer views of the cliffs from above. To get down to the beach, use the signposted accesses on site. This guide does not publish distances or fares without an official source.
Two views: from above and from below
- From above: the view from the cliff edge takes in the sea, the strip of sand and the curve of the coast. It’s beautiful in the late afternoon.
- From the sand: from below, the colors of the cliffs are more intense, especially with side light in the morning or afternoon.
Sea and tide
The sea at Taípe is open, with waves that vary with the wind. At low tide, the strip of sand widens and stretches of rock and reef appear near the shore. Follow the lifeguards’ guidance when they are present.
Cliff precautions
Cliffs are fragile formations. Erosion caused by rain and tides can loosen chunks. So:
- don’t sit or lie right at the base;
- don’t climb the walls;
- don’t dig or take clay;
- after heavy rain, take extra care.
Pair it with
North of Taípe is Pitinga Beach, also with red cliffs. To the south, Rio da Barra. The outing fits into the day trip to Arraial d’Ajuda and Porto Seguro.
Practical tips
- See the cliffs from above, at the roadside viewpoint, and then from below, on the sand.
- Don't sit right at the base of the cliffs: chunks can break off, especially after rain.
- Don't dig or take clay from the cliffs; they are fragile and protected.
- Fit Taípe in on the way between Trancoso and Arraial d'Ajuda.
